A long-distance vibrator is a wearable toy that your partner controls from their own phone, through an app and over the internet, so it responds even when you are apart. Not every app-controlled vibrator works at a distance, and a wireless remote is something else again: it is made for when you are together. The product description tells you which kind you are looking at, and our Remote & App collection gathers the app-controlled wearables.
Remote, app nearby, app over the internet: three different things
The three are easy to confuse, but each works in its own way.
- A wireless remote comes in the box with the toy. There is no phone or app to set up, and it usually works over a short range, so it is meant for when you are in the same room. Celesta works this way.
- An app nearby turns your smartphone into the remote. The phone stays close to the toy, and the app can offer options a remote cannot: for Prospero, the manufacturer lists classic, sound, touch and music modes.
- An app over the internet is what long-distance really means. Your partner uses the app on their own phone, wherever they are, and the commands travel online. The descriptions of Nyx and Prospero mention this kind of control.
Some toys combine two of these. Oberon, a vibrating ring, can be controlled from the ring itself or from the app, and Nyx works through the app both nearby and at a distance. If you are choosing your first vibrator, our guide on how to use a vibrator covers the main types and first steps.
How they connect
A remote is made for its own toy, so there is nothing to install: charge the toy and follow the manual.
App toys usually pair with the wearer's phone over Bluetooth, a short-range connection. Our product pages do not name the connection type, so the manual is your reference; for Nyx and Opaline, it includes a QR code for the app.
Over the internet, the toy typically stays connected to a phone close by, and your partner's app sends commands to that phone online. In general, this means both phones need a working connection, and a weak signal can make the toy respond with a delay. Before a first session apart, try the app together in the same room, so you both know how it responds.

What to look for in a long-distance vibrator
Before you choose, check five points in the description. Here is what the manufacturer states for ours.
- Range. Look for the words long-distance or over the internet. None of our product pages gives a range in metres, so think of a remote or a nearby app connection as something for the same room.
- Charging and running time. Nyx and Opaline take about 2 hours to charge and run for about 1 hour, according to the manufacturer. For Prospero, Oberon and Celesta no running time is given; all three charge over USB, Celesta with a magnetic cable. Charge fully before a long-distance date: only the person wearing the toy can plug it in.
- Water. Celesta is rated IPX7 by the manufacturer, and Nyx, Prospero and Oberon are described by the manufacturer as waterproof. Opaline's description makes no water claim, so keep it dry. Whatever the toy, never charge it while it is wet, and keep the charging contacts dry.
- How it is worn. If you have been searching for vibrating panties, this is the idea: Opaline, a slim petal shape, sits in your own underwear, held in place by a magnetic clip. Celesta's flexible U shape is worn by both partners together.
- Who holds the controls. With Nyx and Prospero, your partner can choose the rhythm from their phone; with Opaline, either of you can use the app; Oberon can also be adjusted on the ring itself; with Celesta, whoever holds the remote sets the pace. Decide together who leads before you start.
Consent and privacy
Handing someone the controls of a toy you are wearing is an act of trust. Agree the rules together before you start, not halfway through:
- who holds the controls, and when and where it is fine to use them;
- a word or a signal that means stop, by message too if you are apart;
- that the person wearing the toy can stop at any moment, for example by taking it off;
- that the controls stay between the two of you and are not passed on to anyone else.
Consent can change during a session: if your partner asks you to stop, stop. Never control a toy someone is wearing without their clear agreement. These toys are for adults only.
Privacy is the other half. We do not make the app, and we do not know what data it collects or how it stores it, so read the app's privacy policy before you pair the toy. Allow only the permissions you are comfortable with, keep the app updated and lock your phone. If you would rather leave phones out of it, a remote needs no app: Celesta comes with a wireless remote in the box.
Our five, one by one
Specifications are as stated by the manufacturer.
- Nyx: a curved, wearable vibrator with a free smartphone app for nearby or long-distance control. 9 vibration patterns; about 2 hours of charging for about 1 hour of use.
- Opaline: a slim petal shape of about 8.4 × 4.1 cm, worn in your underwear with its magnetic clip and controlled from a smartphone app. Its description mentions use at home or out for the evening, not long-distance control. About 2 hours of charging for about 1 hour of use.
- Prospero: a vibrating plug with four graduated beads on a flexible body and a flared base, about 13.9 cm long, with the widest bead about 3.2 cm. 9 vibration modes, plus app control with a long-distance mode. Any toy for anal use needs a flared base like this one, which stays outside the body. Go slowly, use a water-based lubricant (silicone-based lubricants can damage silicone toys) and stop if you feel pain or discomfort.
- Oberon: a soft, stretchy vibrating ring with a sculpted nub placed so that both partners feel the rhythm. 9 vibration settings, changed from the ring or from the app. How to put one on and use it together is explained in our guide to vibrating rings and couples vibrators.
- Celesta: a flexible U-shaped vibrator worn by both partners together, with a wireless remote. 10 vibration frequencies, rated IPX7, magnetic USB charging, about 125 g. It is made for being together, not for distance.
Availability varies by country: a product that does not appear for your address is not offered there, as our FAQ explains. To see the app-controlled wearables side by side, browse our Remote & App collection.
Questions
What should I look for in a vibrator for long-distance use?
A description that mentions control over the internet, not only nearby. Then check the running time, whether it can get wet and who holds the controls. Among our toys, the descriptions of Nyx and Prospero mention long-distance control.
How do long-distance toys with an app work?
Usually, the toy stays connected to the wearer's phone, and the partner's app sends commands to that phone over the internet, so both phones need a connection.
How does an app-controlled vibrator work?
The app replaces buttons or a remote: you change the rhythm on your phone screen and the toy follows, nearby or, if its description says so, at a distance.
Is a remote-control vibrator the same as a long-distance one?
Not if it uses a handheld remote: a remote has a short range and is meant for when you are together, while long-distance control goes through an app and the internet.
Does the app collect my data?
We do not know, because we do not make the app. Read its privacy policy before pairing the toy, and allow only the permissions you are comfortable with.
